kindness

we are in the middle of some serious cookie baking here.

............
we did it. we started a new tradition today.
the 12 days of kindness.

last night at dinner, we brainstormed a list of simple things we could do for others each day. i was, yet again, amazed at the things the boys decided on...

historically speaking, the 12 days of christmas are traditionally celebrated after christmas. but in the magee house, we jam to the beat of a different drummer. so, we're starting today and will celebrate our 12 days of kindness through christmas eve.

our 12 days of kindness activities.

day 1 -do something nice for one of your brothers.
day 2 - find a chore to do without being asked.
day 3 - make a christmas card for your teacher.
day 4 - call a family member and tell them how much you love them.
day 5 - do something nice for a neighbor.
day 6 - make a christmas card for a grandparent.
day 7 - do something nice for dad.
day 8 - make a christmas card for a solider.
day 9 - go christmas caroling and donate the funds to the apa.
day 10 - pull the old "candy cane and coin" trick on a vending machine.
day 11 - do something nice for mom.
day 12 - deliver christmas gifts to a family who needs them.

i wrote out each day on a different ornament (i cheated and used fun to/from tags from target) and added them to the tree in the boys room.

i started giving my mom a wizard of oz ornament for her birthday
when i was a freshman in high school and continue this tradition every year on her birthday.
i can't wait for these experiences for the boys. sam started the day by finding matching socks for both of his brothers from the sock basket. also, they are looking for folks to go caroling with them. they think that if they have more people singing, then they will get more money for the apa.
.....
back to baking. i've got shortbread cookies in the oven and have to be at work soon!
:)

  1. LOVE Jacks face in that pictures. That is a keeper for sure.
Really enjoyed reading this blog. What a wonderful idea. I will have to keep this in mind for when I have kids. A great way to keep the real meaning of Christmas alive.
    Thanks for sharing.

  3. Our 12 Days of Kindness were great. Some days went better than others, of course! When they went caroling, we collected over $20 for the APA. It was nice to hear them talking about helping out instead of what they wanted others to buy them for Christmas. I think we've created a new family tradition!
