as i write this post, so many words are floating through my head...
remember
love
moments
changed
understanding
family
instant
service
peace
life
forever
hope
today is one of those days. the words are all jumbled together as i think about where i was ten years ago today at that moment when our world changed forever.
i was student teaching in a first grade classroom, looking at a journal entry with a student, when the principal came to the door and pulled my cooperating teachers to let them know what happened. then parents started arriving. and one by one our class dwindled, as parents pulled their children out of school.
more than anything, i remember being pregnant for the first time. every fear in that moment was intensified. i wondered about the kind of world we were bringing this sweet, innocent baby into...
so...fast forward to this week...
i'm now trying to again explain to my own fourth and first grader what happened in our world on that day ten years ago. we have spent lots of time this past week talking about the events of 9.11.01. check out this great article on the brentwood-maplewood patch with ideas for talking to kids about 9.11.
my guys thought it would be a great idea to make something to take to the firefighters to say thank you. so we made brownies and pumpkin muffins.
and we delivered them to the fire station...
on foot...
the fire fighters were cleaning the trucks when we arrived.
they were so grateful and appreciative.
they even let the boys climb in the truck.
then a call came in... and we watched them pull out...
jack on the walk home, sporting his new fire fighter hat.
just look at that face!!!
and that's when i realized it...i had nothing to fear on that day long ago.
our children are so full of peace and understanding, unlike any other generation.
and that fills my heart with joy and hope for the future.
